Shanghai Garbage Poured Into Taihu Lake | 上海的垃圾倾倒于太湖内
Suzhou authorities confirmed that the eight suspicious vessels covered with tarps that were spotted in Jiangdong Village last week were actually carrying 4,000 tons of garbage from Shanghai. Their payloads of mixed construction debris had been secretly poured onto Suzhou's Xishan Island (Taihu Lake). The ships that carried the garbage have been detained in Suzhou, and police are investigating the matter further. Taihu National Tourism Resort environmental and public security departments have been inspecting both the dump site and the vessels, found to have originated in Shanghai's Jiading district. EPA sampling of the water near where the garbage was dumped did not reveal any contamination but authorities plan to continue to monitor the site. Locals say that this is not the first time that Shanghai companies have used the Suzhou area as a rubbish dumping ground.
