Description
Kaiyuan Temple is located at 11 Dongda Jie inside Panmen Gate. It was listed as a heritage conservation site in Jiangsu Province in 1956. It is currently under the protection and management of Suzhou Municipal Administration of Cultural Relics. The temple was established in the Hou Tang originally, and was rebuilt in the Manchu Dynasty. The temple's Cangjing Building was constructed in the Ming Dynasty and is made of brick and is seven stories high. Wuliang Hall (the literal meaning of this name is Beamless Hall) is the only ancient building remaining inside Kaiyuan Temple. Wuliang Hall was built in 1618 and is one of only four great beamless halls in China. The hall is built using a beamless frame structure and represents the typical brick and wood structure type commonly seen in the Ming Dynasty. Compared to the other beamless structures in China, Suzhou's Wuliang Hall is not the largest in scale but is considered superior for its delicate structure and painstaking attention to detail. Wuliang Hall is the perfect example of the advanced building techniques of the Ming Dynasty. It is regarded as the crown of the majestic buildings south of the Yangtze River.
